Prefrontal activation and pupil dilation during n-back task performance: A combined fNIRS and pupillometry study

چکیده
The n-back task is one of the most commonly used working memory (WM) paradigms in cognitive neuroscience. Converging evidence suggests activation lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) and pupil dilation [a proxy for locus coeruleus (LC) activation] during this task. However, it remains unclear whether PFC LC are functionally associated performance. This study's aim was to examine relationship between changes activity diameter evaluate effect WM load on such Thirty-nine healthy young adults (10 males, 29 females) underwent a number paradigm with 0- 3-back conditions. Their hemodynamics size performance were simultaneously measured using 16-channel functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) device wearable eye tracker. Young exhibited significant bilateral increases when high (i.e., 3-back) but not low 0-back) compared resting period. Interestingly, positive correlations found 0-back only. These tended be stronger than condition. Thus, may vary at different levels Our findings have important implications neuropsychiatric research support concurrent fNIRS pupillometric measurements better understanding mechanisms underlying processing.

Mental workload during n-back task—quantified in the prefrontal cortex using fNIRS
When interacting with technical systems, users experience mental workload. Particularly in multitasking scenarios (e.g., interacting with the car navigation system while driving) it is desired to not distract the users from their primary task. For such purposes, human-machine interfaces (HCIs) are desirable which continuously monitor the users' workload and dynamically adapt the behavior of the...
متن کاملPrefrontal Cortex Activation and Young Driver Behaviour: A fNIRS Study
Road traffic accidents consistently show a significant over-representation for young, novice and particularly male drivers. This research examines the prefrontal cortex activation of young drivers and the changes in activation associated with manipulations of mental workload and inhibitory control. It also considers the explanation that a lack of prefrontal cortex maturation is a contributing f...
متن کاملDifferential dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activation during a verbal n-back task according to sensory modality.
Functional neuroimaging studies carried out on healthy volunteers while performing different n-back tasks have shown a common pattern of bilateral frontoparietal activation, especially of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Our objective was to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare the pattern of brain activation while performing two similar n-back tasks which diff...
متن کاملIndividual Differences in Pupil Dilation during Naming Task
The present study investigates individual differences in pupil dilation during standard word naming. We looked at (i) how individual subjects’ pupil size changes over the course of time and (ii) how well pupil size is predicted by the frequency of the stimuli. The time course of the pupil size was analysed with generalized additive modeling. The results show large individual variations in the p...
